Authorities raised Louisiana's death toll to 197 on Sunday, and recovery of corpses continued. Teams pulled an unspecified number of bodies from Memorial Medical Center, a 317-bed hospital in uptown New Orleans that closed more than a week ago after being surrounded by floodwaters.

Elsewhere, there were nuggets of encouraging news.

- Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport reopened for cargo traffic Sunday, and planned to open to limited passenger service starting Tuesday.

- The city's main wastewater treatment facility will be running by Monday, said Sgt. John Zeller, an engineer with the California National Guard.

- Army Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honore, commander of active duty troops engaged in hurricane relief, reiterated Sunday the number of dead would be "a heck of a lot lower" than initial projections of 10,000 or more.

And residents of New Orleans were trying to re-establish pieces of the city's inimitable character. Some even found things to laugh about.

Barbara Hoover, who lives in the Faubourg-Marigny neighborhood just down river from the French Quarter, said the military's ready-to-eat meals are "just as good, if not better, than the South Beach Diet. They're amazing."
Hmmmmm.... why I thought there were upwards to 10,000 dead?????

One shouldn't be flippant over the deaths of people, regardless of the number.

she obviously didn't get the ones from the British Army then :D

Agree with the comment that any deaths are sad, but it is heartening to hope that fewer than expected have perished in this tragedy.

It must also restore a bit of pride in the US seeing the relief efforts beginning to bring good, and speedy, results?

No disrespect to the dead, only the prognosticators who predicted such doom and gloom.

EDIT: Note that Gov. Blanco, now on the hot seat, is now saying "O look, our evac plan worked so well... only a few dead in terms of what could have been" compared with last weeks hammering of the Administration saying death toll would be in the thousands and it's all their fault. Who's being flipant??

If you're going to post in a foreign language, it would be polite to provide a translation for those of us that speak English...uh, American.

Very good news indeed! I had a very strong feeling that the folks in N.O. would absolutely refuse to abandon their city and I'm glad to hear it. Things are definitely looking up!

From the NEW YORK TIMES

September 13, 2005
Units Search for Bodies but Some Find None
By JOHN KIFNER
MICHOUD, La., Sept. 12 - Despite apocalyptic predictions, marines searching St. Bernard Parish - in the direct path of Hurricane Katrina - have yet to find any bodies, commanders said Monday.

"St. Bernard is actually doing pretty good," said Capt. Stephen Kahn, operations officer for the battalion of marines brought in from Camp Lejeune, N.C., as part of the administration's response to the storm.

"The areas worst flooded, as our guys are getting in there, they're not finding anything," said Captain Kahn, referring to the bodies that were anticipated. Fears were reinforced when previous rescue workers found swollen dead bodies last week in St. Rita's nursing home here. The home's officials have said that 32 of the 60 residents perished.

The marines are grinding through swamps and bayous in amphibious troop carriers, searching a landscape of ruined houses, some torn into scraps like matchsticks, others with stairs leading to nowhere. Houses that have been searched and found empty were marked with a spray-painted orange "X."
