Ethanol and Fiberglass Fuel Tanks

This morning I was told by my local Mercruiser dealer that there is significant data showing that ethanol attacks the resin in fiberglass fuel tanks, and that failure can only be prevented by replacing the tank with a metal tank. One of the articles he showed me said that the problem was thought to be primarily with pre mid-80's fiberglass, but I own a '93 Crownline with a fiberglass tank and am needless to say concerned.

Does anyone have any experience with this problem, or is it truly a problem with boats constructed in the 90's? If I have a safety issue, I need to know. If I have been informed of a rare situation that does not really relate to my boat, I need to know that as well.

Many thanks in advance......

It is all in resin that was used (and a lot of it does get eaten buy new gas)

Only crownline would know that Unless you can find the tag ON the tank and contact the MFG

Don S...... In a reply in an old thread about this subject your referenced a Mercury web page regarding ethanol and fiberglass....... that page no longer opens.... do you have access to the Mercury information that you can post, or is the information no longer considered accurate?.. Thanks
