Whats the current reputation on Evinrude ETECs? I bought a 50hp ETEC back in 2003 but sold the boat after about 75 hours. From a durability and performance standpoint, how do they compete against comprable models from other manufacturers? I've been searching boat classifieds for a few weeks now and I've seen more than a couple low hour ETECs that have had powerheads and/or fuel injectors replaced.

I'm not looking for a Ford vs Chevy debate....

etcs are just as good as anything else .a buddy of mine was at a merc dealer just recently and one of the mech told him they (mercury) were total crappola.same went for a yammy mech putting down etec .with the exception of Chinese products I don't think there are really bad motors anymore just personal preference .I love my 60 etec and wouldn't even concider another brand .you mentioned powerheads replaced.my friends 50 merc 4 poke had the same thing done to it but its still a fine reliable motor since the issue was resolved.dont really know if it means anything but up here all govt agencies on both sides of the border seem to be switching to etec.

The Etec is the official motor on official boats on lake Tahoe, where motors that don't meet CARB requirements are banned.
Now there are a number of companies building direct injected 2 strokes. Fewer parts,Fewer service intervals, more low end power.

I own an ETEC snowmobile and love it, the thing is rated to put out less emissions than the 4 stoke counterparts, and I get very little tail-pipe smoke. I also get very little oil consumption compared to say my Merc 2 stroke 90 HP which I love, but let's face it, it's a stinker. I think the technology is too new to talk about 10-20 year use, but I sure love my 600 ETEC, the power is great, the fuel mileage is really good too. I think they are really quiet too.

Heck get out and test drive a couple to see what they are like on the water.
