In and ad for Etec engines I was looking at the maintenance schedule. It said 3 years or 300 hours for changing the gear oil. What's new with this engine (or a new gear oil?) that allows you to go so long without a change? Is it the synthetic gear oil?

Re: Etec gear oil

The E-TEC uses a special synthetic oil made to tolerate a percentage of water without damaging the gears or bearings.

So does Evinrude recommend or should I sy even suggest this gear oil for any of its motors along with the 3 year 300 hour change interval?

The next question is how does the gear case handle temperatures that go down to -20 degrees during winter storage with this water inside?

The oil is formulated to tolerate water in the oil without damaging the beraings and gears, but remember water is not normal in the oil. If you have water in the oil you need to find out from where and repair before storing for the cold winter months.

Gear oil doesn't wear out. It becomes contaminated. No contaminates in your oil and you shouldn't have to ever change it.
