Hey guys. Ive been a long time lurker and I want to start out by thanking you guys for all the info ive been able to dig up here. I have a sears GF 7.5 (217-586752) that has developed a problem. I was out on the lake this past weekend and while running back to the landing my outboard became almost impossible to steer, like it had locked up. not 15 seconds after i noticed the the steering issue the motor started to struggle and then died. it appeard to have overheated. the motor was very hot and was smoking old oil and gas off. My father in law was behind me so he towed me to the landing. while under tow i was able to steer easily from left to right. I recieved this motor last year and it looked as if it was never used, prop was flawless and carb was clean. I went ahead and rebuilt the carb and it usually will start on the second pull. Now for my questions:

1. is it obvious that my impellar failed and needs to be replaced?
2 is it possible i did any serious damage to the motor?
3 does the water pump kit on the SearsDirect website contain all the parts i need to replace the impellar?
4. is it possible that the motor got so hot that the metal swelled causing the steering to get tight?

Sorry for the long winded note! any info helps!

1. sure sounds like it.
2. realy depends on how long you ran it wide open with out the impeller working.
3. Sears is a rip off but they have nice diagrams and we thank them, check out these guys http://www.boatsportandtackle.com/servlet/StoreFront or www.certifiedpartscorp.com/vintage or sierra part no.15-3054 and save some money, thats your impeller same as the old merc 9.8
4. that would be my guess, theres a good chance you melted the lower crank seal too and I'm sure your piston is scuffed perrty bad but she should stilll run, Eska made claims that there could be operated for short periods with a failed pump with no damage.

No one has been ignored Seakaye but with all of your learning since you have been here I thought just maybe you could at least answer this simple questions since it has been asked and answered at least 500 times in the past, but I see your only usefulness is bumping things.
I guess You need to bone up son because in the future all the Eska questions are yours and if anyone gets ignored the monkey is on your back......

goodbye

Re: Eska impeller question

It may be that the bearing sleeves inside the transom clamp castings has worn thru - I had mine do that, and it was aluminum on aluminum in the steering joint. It made no difference how much or what type of grease I pumped in there, it would bind up under throttle load. Those things are cheap, I think, but I cut a couple up out of plastic and stuck'em in there to get by. Take a look at parts number 8 and 10 here;

PS - DO NOT order them from Sears, get'em from Certified Parts corporation or boatsportandtackle.com

Re: Eska impeller question

Hey fellas. I got everything pulled apart and found the impeller in pieces. I went ahead and ordered a water pump kit from Boat sport and tackle.com. Their shipping is fast!!! Anyways, looking at the new impeller, I doesn't appear to be directional. Is this a correct assumption?

Re: Eska impeller question

You just want to make sure you bias the impeller vanes when you install it. The motor turns clockwise as you look down at it, so you want to turn the impeller counterclockwise as you cram it into it's housing. You are correct - you can't get it upside down.
