Eska air filter?

Working on a newly acquired '73 Eska Ted Williams. Simple question. If this is basically a tecumseh engine, as used on lawn mowers, etc, why no airfilter? Or is there supposed to be one?

I took the lower cowling off (looks cool!) and can look right into the carb through the choke. Seems like anything can get in there (water, bugs, dirt). Am I missing a part?

Can I use it with the lower cowling off?

Thanks

No. Not much dirt it the air out on the water, but if you'll feel better a screen to filter out aquatic insects is OK.;)

Most do----easier to get to things to tinker and the reason most old Mercurys are found with the cowl cheeks missing. Early Mercurys needed a LOT of tinkering!

Thanks for the reply.

I like the idea of a screen. simple enough.

I was just wondering if the cowling was to keep water away from it. I haven't had it on the water yet.

Sucking in a few drops of spray or rain won't harm it. Now if you are going to take some sea over the bow, you shouldn't be out there anyway.

Bugs?? Well it probably can digest a mosquito, but a beetle, probably not.

I always try and remember to close the choke and tie a shop towel around the carb when trailering to keep dust out and to keep from damaging the reeds,
