Hello,

I just purchased a used Eska 2 hp motor, so I'm changing the spark plug, lower unit oil, etc. I was wondering, there are four bolts that hold the bottom portion of the skeg on to the lower unit. Is there any danger in taking these off to see the condition of the unit inside? I presume there is an impeller in there, and some other items. I just don't want to take something off, have something come out, and then not be able to put it back together.

Thanks so much.

Kind regards,

Big Mark

I'm pretty sure that is simply a cover.Impeller if any is not in there.
Impeller is above the antivent plate. Some early motors had a water tube visable below the plate. prop thrust pushes water up the tube to cool the exhaust leg. I didn't find a 2 hp in any of my after market manuals.55-89.
Unfortunately most of these motors are finicky pains in the a_ _.If you like to tinker you will have your hands full.I wouldn't invest anymore than your purchase cost unless you get it to purr before hand.

From memory those models marked with a large "2" on the side were in fact rated at 1.6HP, the '2' was for the 2 cubic inch displacement (about 33 cc) and were of late '70s-early '80s vintage.

I wouldn't spend any significant money attempting to repair one either.

Both of you, thanks so much for you're responses. Honestly, the motor didn't cost me much, just $100, and it seems to run just fine. I purchased a carb kit and new prop., that's it, and I expect it to run without any problems. They're so lightweight, just 18.5 lbs., ideal for pushing a light inflatable pontoon boat.

Thanks again.

Kind regards,

I've been battling one of those for about 10 years. It's used heavily in salt water, so maintenance is pretty much constant, but I always seem to get it running again.
I see no reason to take those 4 bolts off the lower unit -- it's air cooled, so there's no impeller to change.
Good luck!
