These two vehicles are basically the same except for Ford has a 2.9 ratio rear (20/24 mpg) and Mazda has a 3.7 (18/22 mpg). If both have the V6 and AWD wouldn't the Mazda make for a better tow vehicle?

Re: Escape vs Tribute

How did you find out they had different ratio's? Not doubting you at all, just curious. Do all Escapes come with the same ratio or is the gear ratio an option?

My mother drives an escape and it's a nice little SUV. I would think it would make a good tow vehicle up to a 2000# load.

Check your info again. Are you comparing AWD to FWD?

Other than that, they are IDENTICAL besides the sheet metal and trim. Built in the same plant.

Mark, if your info on gear ratios is accurate, then yes, the one with the lower ratio might make a better tow vehicle. It would certainly help low end acceleration.

DJ, what plant does Ford build these two vehicles in?

Ditto The mazda should tow better due to the differant ratio. Just make sure it has the factory tow package.

The Kansas City plant builds the Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute SUVs.

Bob

Re: Escape vs Tribute

I just checked the Ford web site and they list 2.9:1 axles for all FWD and AWD models, 4 cyl or V6. That's certainly not my choice of axle ratios for towing. Go with the Mazda. You may find the fuel economy to be equal to and in some cases better than the Ford simply because the engine doesn't require as much throttle to maintain speed.

Re: Escape vs Tribute

The info is right off the Ford and Mazda websites. I am comparing V6 AWD models. That 0.8 difference in final drive ratios apparently is good for 2 mpg across the board for Fords version. One, (I think Mazda) lists the gear ratios for the 4 speed automatic but the other doesn't. I suspect they are the same and its the final drive ratios that make the difference in fuel economy. Ford also offers 5 different trim models, Mazda two.

The 4 speed listed on the mazda site is 1:1 in 3rd gear, and 4th is overdrive at 0.698:1. I also didn't see any reference to heavy duty towing options such as more cooling or larger battery and alternator.

My sister has a Chrysler Pacifica AWD and that is one nice ride. It cost about 5K more than the best Escape, but is much nicer and larger all around. Also gets 17/23 mpg, has 3500lbs towing capacity and 250 hp. Both vehicles have high reving v6 engines. Not my favorite motor.

Just trying to find a suitable replacement for my wife's Mountaineer. I'm afraid the Escape may be too small for our family.

Chevy Trailblazer will tow over 5000 and they are still available at employee discount along with a $2300 (2005 model year) rebate. The mileage is 15/17 but tons of room. Every domestic dealer has great deals on 05's too.

I am in the business and I would suggest GM/Ford for towing. Chrysler just does not get my vote.

Bob

Re: Escape vs Tribute

I reluctantly looked at the Honda Pilot before our last purchase. I looked at the escape, explorer, expedition, envoy, and others. We ended up buying a pilot. Great ride, a much larger than you would expect interior, and decent mileage. I average 19 to 22 mpg depending on my mix of city/hwy. The interior is huge compared to a mountaineer, explorer, trailblazer and envoy. The ride is better than any of them. You must have the tow package. It will tow up to a 4500lb boat. I have a light 16 center console (boat/motor/trailer ~ 1100 lbs) and you don't even know if it behind the vehicle. The AWD system is also outstanding. I live in MA and we get a ton of snow. I also have a very steep driveway. The AWD system is very active and seemless. In the year and half that I have owned it, I can't remember a wheel slipping in any situation (ice, snow, rain, slimy boat ramps). You can also lock all 4 wheels with a button for soft sand or mud.

I not suggesting that it is a tow vehicle for heavy boats, but it is a great vehicle for everyday family life (seats 8)and then used on weekends to pull a small or moderate boat.

Mark, The new Explorer is due out soon and I think the slight changes are a big improvement in the looks.

Is your mountaineer a V8? The next generation has 3v/cyl for more power and a little better economy.

The Jeep Liberty would be a better tow vehicle than an escape. Up to 5k rating. The diesel version get 27 mpg on the highway. Plus has lots of torque for towing

mark

Edmunds.com just did a first drive write up on the 06. They really liked it and they usually don't like American vehicles.
