With my brand new compression tester, I measured 125-130
PSI on each cylinder (engine has less than 10 hours on it).
Is this OK?
Have fresh fuel mixed 50:1, VRO disconnected, new in-line
fuel filter, primer bulb is firm, nice blue spark at plugs.
New battery, on a charger.
Plugs look good but will replace anyway. She fires and runs
for about 2 seconds, that’s all, with choke on.
Was stored in barn for at least 2 years.
She is a 3 cylinder inline.
Is my next step to do the carbs?

Newell

Re: Erud 70hp

That's where I'd start and I'd bet 50 to one it's gummed up carbs.

Hey, guys. Newell posted this turkey on Nov 8 and got mucho help. Now he chooses to start fresh, as though nothing has happened before.

Before you reply, go back to the nov 8 thread and get a little history.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: Erud 70hp

I bumped Newells other threads, so anyone interested in this problem can see the history. A motor that doesnt run is cosidered ONE SUBJECT, The reason being is, all posted info adds up to help solve a problem.

Also, others can learn the thought process of solving a similar problem. There really is no other better way to do it. Keep it on one thread, so the history is not scattered all over the place, and we all will be further ahead. :)

JB/Evin,
Sorry guys, my only thought was to get her
running, rather than to be “politically correct”.
Since the stripers are running in the Chesapeake Bay,
this “turkey” is important to me.
What does “bump” mean, how is it done and who
makes the decision ?
Will try to do better.

Just reply to your own thread, type the word "bump" (or anything you want for that matter) and then your thread is brought from the cellar back to the top again, where more people will see it.

Its not about being "politically correct", its about solving your problem faster and better, by keeping it on one thread. Newell, someday when you try to help someone in this group, you will see what I mean.

To sum it up, its hard enough to solve a problem without actually being there. To solve a problem online requires lots of DATA about your motor, and the DATA is preferably all in one place, (one thread). All of this information adds up to draw a (hopefully concise) picture of your problem.

After reading your first thread, it looks like we are just waiting to see how well it runs after the carbs are re-built. Let us know how it goes. Good Luck

Newell,
I have the same motor that had the same problem. I'll bet my next retirement check that your problem is your carbs. If you need assistance/advise on removing/cleaning and rebuilding carbs, drop me a line at my email address: foosballpaul@yahoo.com If you wish, send your phone number and I'll give you a ring and we can discuss problem. I'm right up the road in Maryland. That 70 is a great little motor when you get it running correctly.

I agree with Chum Slick.....I have the exact same engine and it ran rough until I took all three carbs off and gave them a good cleaning. If yours sat up any length of time it's a good bet that the premix oil has gummed up your jets.Once you clean that up you should have a solid running engine.

Flounder, I just had a phone conversation with Foosballpaul and he put me on to some things I hadn't heard about before. I feel sure the carbs are the problem and will clean them this weekend following his instructions.
Thank you guys for giving me new hope!

Newell

Re: Erud 70hp

Good deal.....Just be sure after you take them apart and you are spraying all the little openings and jets with carb cleaner that you use some eye protection. That stuff is unpredictable where it will shoot out.You will probably find small amounts of a jello-like goo in the carbs,(dried up premix oil) Take your time and make sure you get the carbs super clean. You'll be glad you did. With the compression numbers your engine has, looks like you'll have a sweet running 70 when it's done.Let us know how it goes...

Re: Erud 70hp

Foos/Flounder,
I had previously removed and cleaned the top and center carbs.
This weekend I removed and cleaned the lower carb. In no case did I
find any crud. They were clean as a whistle. I used carb cleaner ,wire and
air. Also I removed and cleaned the primer solenoid and only saw a
small amount of crud in one section of the filter. Since she is now running,
I can’t argue with success. I must have done something.

The jets appear to be fixed and non-adjustable, true?

I have started her about 10 times this weekend at different intervals. Sometimes
she starts before I can release the start switch while at other times I
must encourage her. If I wait an hour or more between starts, I have to again
squeeze the primer bulb. This is no big deal but is it telling me something?
Have replaced the tank, line and bulb.

Think I need to take her to the river and run her WOT for a while. Opinions?

Thanks for the step by step advice as well as the encouragement!

Newell

Re: Erud 70hp

Sounds like you have it fixed! If you have a new primer bulb installed,I don't think it is really trying to tell you anything as long as it pumps up firm when you squeeze it.
Sounds like you are ready to take her out and run her.If you have a friend with a boat, get to shadow you in the event of a "suprise".Hopefully the 70 will run fine.
Word to the wise, keep a spare primer bulb on your boat at all times.I towed a friend halfway around a lake one day for lack of a $4 part for his boat.
