Erratic Tohatsu 3.5 HP

I have an older (but in like new condition) Tohatsu 2.5 HP outboard, Model 2.5A. This unit does not have the electronic ignition system, but rather the older points/condenser/coil setup. It has spark.. but when started it only fires on every third or fourth revolution (surges) and eventually quits. I have had the coil checked and it is OK! The spark plug has been replaced. The carburator has been removed and cleaned. The cylinder has excellent compression. All electrical connections have been cleaned but the problem persists. I have owned this engine since it was new and it has always operated flawlessly until this problem developed. Any and all suggestions and or comments that might help me solve this problem would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you..

Push in the choke!<br /><br />Sounds like it's flooding.<br /><br />Either the choke is still on, the carb adjustments are out of whack, the floats (if it has em) are stuck, or the carb has a mudbug making it's home in there.

I appreciate all of the information provided thus far. Thank you.. To continue on, I need the parts breakdown for this outboard. Local dealer (50 miles away) eitrher can't or won't help me. Does anyone know where I can obtain the parts list / breakdown for a Tohatsu 2.5 HP Model M 2.5A manufactured in the late 80's or early 90's. It was the one made with conventional ignition instead of the CD ignition. Any help in locating these documents would be greatly appreciated.

You are kidding us. Right, Ted?<br /><br />A Tohatsu with a problem? What a rare event! very few of us have experience with Tohatsu problems.<br /><br />You may be getting intermittent spark, but my gut says you have a fuel problem. Perhaps restricted flow to the carb, perhaps a float setting or overlooked tiny passage in the carb. Maybe fuel contamination.<br /><br />Good luck.
