eratic water pressure gauge

I have a 1986 150 Xr2 and just got done rebuilding water pump according to the manual, and after replacing everything from lower pump housing up my pressure seems abnormal, it holds at about 12 to 15 psi ay idle but when I increase RPM out on the water it surges to 20 and drops to 10 and so on and so on back and forth but never stabilizes, you can see it surging through the tell tale, the only thing I think I missed is running a bead of silicone across the exhaust plate seperator, also thermostats are about 2 months old so they were operating before rebuild. Any body have any clues to what ails this thing.

You might check your poppit valve. Maybe it is sticking. You have very high pressure at idle, for that motor.

well just a quick update, took the poppit valve out and replaced and yep, thats the ticket perfect pressure now the longer I work on them the dumber I get. thanks for the help!
