Hi i am in the process of buying a sailboat from Canada and importing it to the States. Its tender has a 1998 Yamaha 9.9 HP model F9.9MSHW. The customs people want to see the EPA sticker but the motor was sourced in CA and does not have one.

Does anyone out there have one of thes motors, and if so, could you take a picture of its EPA sticker and respond with it?

Thanks a ton - Jim Stewart, Snohomish, WA.

Same model that was sold here in the USA. In fact, it might have been. Strange that customs is looking for some EPA information.

Do you have the ending identification numbers and letters?

Maybe the emissions information in the owner's manual can be used to satisfy customs.

Southern border is wide open. And customs is worried about an outboard motor on the northern border. Makes no sense.

Yamaha Canada or Yamaha US?

Whichever did not sell the motor will not recognize the motor in their system.

Maybe buy a sticker off E-bay.-----Pretty sad if all they know and recognize / understand is a sticker.----I guess they are sticking to the rules / regulations / instructions on the desk in front of them.----They know nothing about motors.

I’m guessing your acting as your own customs broker?

We import and export equipment on a regular basis. Don’t assume customs knows what they are talking about. Been fighting with customs for years over the HS classification of our equipment.

Read the attached docs which outline the requirements and give them a call. Be prepared to cite from the documents below. Ask to speak with a Supervisor if need be

So if you are bringing an EV into the USA , will you need to explain how you charge the battery ?-----Going to use clean electricity or get it from a dirty coal fired plant

Thanks, everyone for your comments. I am working with a customs broker who knows all the rules and Riggs, and we have decided that it’s not worth risking the whole deal by bringing in this uncertified outboard. The sellers broker is going to hold onto the motor and I’ll have a chance to go up and pick it up sometime when the weather is more conductive for a short cruise to Vancouver Island.

The sale is closing today on the last business day of the year. Looking forward to some fun cruising in 2023. Happy holidays!
