enough power?

I have a 1964 merc.110 it is 9.8 hp. I put it on a 14 foot alum. boat. When I took it out today I could not get it to plane out. The front end is way up, this in turns make it seem labored and not real fast. I might just be to use to bigger motors I took a 35 off the boat. Also noticed that when it is running it does not pump a real heavey stream the way my old motor use to is this also because of the size? The guy said that he put a new pump in it last year, is there an easy way to check and make sure. Thanks for all the help you give everyone, this site is great.

Re: enough power?

Make sure that the engine is trimed correctly. There is an adjustment pin for the trim on the bottom of the motor where it bolts to the transom.Tilt the motor to the trailer position then Put the pin in the most forward position. Take the boat out to see how it runs. If the nose of the boat is digging in than move the trim pin back one hole. The boat should be touching the water about 1/4 back from the nose when correctly trimmed. Low HP and too much weight in the stern can also cause it not to plane. Try putting the gas tank and other heavy stuff in the bow.

Re: enough power?

Right now the pin is in the holes closest to the back of the boat. should I start at the hole furthest away or is it already the best it can get? Thanks for the reply
