hello all. I just ordererd a new 16' jon boat with a 4' wide bottom in it. I am thinking of rigging it with a Tohatsu 40 TLDI, but I was wondering if that would be enough power for it. Anybody have any idea how fast it would go, or do I need to go with the 50 instead?

I'd go with the 50. But either would have little problem pushing that boat. Flat bottoms don't take nearly as much horsepower to plane as other hulls. You're going to be in the low 30s with a light load with either.

i have a 15' X 44" Lake Sport modified "V" with .100 gauge hull and 3/16" inner aluminum fabrication coupled to a 30 HP Nissan and have no trouble planing out with 3 200lb adults and plenty of waterfowl gear. Either choice will be plenty for your jon boat. I hate Nissan raised the weight from 156 lbs to 200 lbs when releasing the tldi models, but it was necessary for the technology and their design focus. i gps out with full load right at 30mph.

thanks guys. I was hoping I could get away with the 40. I don't really have any need to go any faster than 30 mph.
