Hello:
I have a 6HP Johnson outboard (Model 6R79E Serial J6100838, CD2 Ignition) With a kill switch problem. The problem is, it does not kill the engine. Otherwise, the engine works just fine. I tested the switch by connecting my ohm meter between the black lead at the three pin connector and the other black lead that connects to the #1 ignition coil. The resistance reading was a little high but looked good. I took the switch apart and cleaned the connections. After that the resistance readings were very good. Well, it still didn’t kill the engine. I thought the only other potential problems were a bad connection at the ignition coil, a broken/bad lead coming from the switch, or the circuitry inside the power pack that grounds the other side of the capacitor. I eliminated the ground at the ignition coil by doing a continuity check between the lead (Not the bolt) at the ignition coil and the lead at the ground for the power pack: I got virtually zero ohms between these two connections. A bad wire from the switch was eliminated by doing a continuity check on the switch. Thinking that the only thing left was the power pack circuitry, I replaced the power pack. The kill circuit still does not work. Am I missing something or is that kill switch so finicky that it could test good but actually still be bad? Now I find out that the Kill switch (P/N 389656) has not been available since 1984; any idea where I can get one.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
Ken

The kill circuit for your engine which is equipped with a powerpack is as follows:

Black wire from ground to kill switch.

Another Black wire or a black/yellow wire connected to a black/yellow wire at the powerpack. A black wire from the powerpack to ground.

Thanks for the reply Joe. I found the problem and the circuit works great now. It turned out to be a bad connection at the pin where the black wire connects to the black/yellow wire going to the power pack.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Ken
