Engine will go into gear with depressing button

I have a 1986 Merc 75 HP outboard in my Skeeter. I can shift it into gear without having to squeeze the trigger on the handle of the remote control. I haven't taken it apart to look at it yet, but does anyone know what it would take to repair it? I have already leaned into it while in neutral at the ramp and thrown it into forward.<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Dan

The problem is in the handle or the aluminium ring underneath so you won't you don't have to tear the box apart just remove the handle and you should see the problem
