Engine water temp.too high?

I have a '92 200 Hp. Mercury outboard that the water temp. gage indicates above mid-range temp (if it were a gas gage,it would be the 3/4 full mark)occassionally. The water pump was replaced last season as an attempt to fix this problem?? Is this really a near overheating problem,or an incorrect gage calibration?
The temp. settles back down to "normal" if I run for a few minutes at "cruising" speed (more water flow). Thanks

If you have the Quicksilver gauge, they calibrated marks on the face don't necessarily mean you're overheating. The hacks correspond to certain temperatures. A Merc dealer should be able to tell you what each mark means in degrees so you know where the gauge should read. I take it no overheat alarms are going off, and you have a good stream from the tell-tale?

It always runs hotter at idle and low rpms.

DON, these motors usually run between the 1/2 and the 3/4 marks at rpms under 2000....on plane will usually run at the 1/4 mark....

Thanks for the info.on engine charging speed and cooling.
No overheat alarms have ever gone off,and I always have a "fair" tell tale stream and good water pressure. It is always under 2000 rpm when the gage creeps to the 3/4 mark. I will ask a Merc dealer what gage marks are in degrees.
Thanks again

I checked out a Quicksilver gauge at the local Merc shop. Lowest peg=100 degrees. Highest=240. 3/4 would be around 170 to 180.
Did the thermostat get replaced at the same time as the impeller?
