I was wondering how to clean my outboard motor. I just removed the cowling and found salt particles on the engine. I've been told to spray it down with WD-40, but I would still like to clean the engine. Any suggestions? Thanks....

Re: Engine wash

I live about 90 miles from the coast so it's a good 1.5 - 2 hour drive home. Once there, the whole boat gets a bath including the outside of the engine. Then the cowling comes off and the powerhead gets the hose. One has to exercise good judgement and not directly blast electrical connectors, directly into air intakes or otherwise dumb places, but a nice fine water spray all over seems to do the trick and has never once caused me a problem. After the spray job is done, the muffs go on and I run it for several minutes to flush the engine out and warm it up enough to evaporate nearly all of the water. After shutdown I might follow with a little corrosion preventative or lube at certain points. All just part of my anal-retentive liefstyle.

In the other hand, if the motor has salt residue and what appears to be very fine salt. How do you clean the inside of the motor other than taking it appart?
