engine trouble

i have a 2003 caravelle interceptor 212 with a volvo penta 5.7L. The raw water pump was dripping so i changed the impeller and o-ring and buttoned it back up. I hooked the boat back up using my water hose attachment to check for leaks and everything looked good i.e, no leaks and engine temp around 150 degrees. I went on to the lake, idled out to the channel and attempted to bring it up to plain and the engine went limp but never died. I tried again and the same thing. I idled back up to boat launch and noticed the engine temp to be 200 degrees before i shut it off. I backed trailer down ramp to load boat up and when i went back to start boat engine it would crank but not start. I noticed that i didn't replace the water hose plug on the boat engine so I replaced it but still would not start. When i returned home i hooked back up to water attachment and tried to start which it did but ran rough so i turned it off. My question is the ecm equipped with a limp mode that would have to be reset or what do you recommend?

Re: engine trouble

What's the full model number or the serial number of your engine. Year of the boat and 5.7L doesn't help much.

Re: engine trouble

You have a 5.7Gi-C. keep that handy and post it the next time you have a problem. Makes it a lot easier to get you the correct information.

Yes, there is a limp mode. It surprises me you didn't have an alarm going off. With that cap off, it will not suck water up to the impeller and you would have had overheat for the riser sensors before the gauge ever showed a problem.
Might want to check the impeller again. I would bet it's damaged as well.
As far as the running rough, without knowing how hot it actually got, I would suggest a compression check to start with.

Re: engine trouble

If it's not overheating, it will reset itself.

Re: engine trouble

so in regards to rough idle/non start it's not an ECM issue?

I don't know, my crystal ball has a crack in it and stopped working. You will have to try the old methods. Troubleshooting.
