I have a 1982 Bayliner Capri with a AQ125A I4 engine. The engine is locked up. what would be the easy and best engine swap for this Boat?

Re: engine swap

Are you sure the rest of the boat is worth all the work? Checked the transom and stringers for rot? being an 82 Bayliner, with a locked up engine, I just think you would be a lot better off looking for another boat.

Another of the same type engine. Anything after that is going to start causing problems, especially if you want to try going to a GM based engine.

The Boat Hull is solid, outdrive is good. I have the tools and experance with auto's, but not Boats. I dont have a lot of $ in this Boat to start with, I assume the same engine in good shape would be hard to find. I would to stay with a 4cyl.

The more desirable larger engines that MIGHT bolt in are going to be even harder to find. Finding anything in 'good' shape for that is probably going to be nearly impossible, you will be buying a junkyard wreck that may or may not work. There is a rusty one on ebay for $2500 right now, sold as-is and condition of 'running when it was removed'.

Time to sell her off for parts...

Well with that info I think I'll pull the motor break it down and see what's got it locked up. May be a rebuild.

Don't get discouraged driver. There are plenty of options available for the Volvo B21 block.

One of my pet peeves is having someone tell you to "scrap it" outright. That isn't helpful to anyone. You should explore all your options and make an educated decision.

That being said, you should follow Don's advice and be cautious about the condition of the rest of the boat. I wouldn't be surprised if there were other hidden issues. And if you are to replace the engine replace it with the same block, as he also mentioned.

The Volvo B21 block is a common engine block used in Volvo cars around 1990. As a last resort, you could always pick up a used auto engine and swap all your marine parts onto the block. They are the same block.

But be ready to drop a little cash to get the engine in good condition. Patience is a good skill to have. There are a lot of little seals and parts that go into the cooling system, etc.

Don't bother looking for a "marine" gasket set for this engine. It's closed cooling so it has regular coolant running through it all the time.

Re: engine swap

In the past I've had good luck dumping atf in the spark plug holes and coming back in a week... Put a bar on the crank and gently rock back and forth... don't force it ... if she frees up keep rocking till you have a full revolution and then crank it over with the starter w plugs out (cover with a rag to stop spraying oil) .... Once she has spun a while put the plugs in and crank some more... finally change oil, add gas and spark and fire it up... just run it easy like you would breaking in a new engine..... after some run time do a compression test.... You MAY have a runner or you MAY have scrap.. compression test will give you a REAL good idea of which.

Good idea from smoke ^^. You would also want to put on a mechanical oil pressure gauge to watch what happens as you start it and run it, if it does. Bearings can die poorly.

Re: engine swap

OK, I am finding a lot of Volvo car engines available out there. Do any of you know if all the so called red blocks are interchangeable? Such B20,B21,B23,B230. Some have turbos, some have EFI,and some just carb.

Re: engine swap

Yes those all use the same block, but only the B21 will work properly with your marine carburetor and camshaft without other modifications. They have different displacements. It doesn't matter if it's EFI, you'll pull all that off and use the stock marine stuff. If you don't it's dangerous.
