Recently had issues with 55 hp Yamaha. A friend gave me a 1975 Johnson 70 hp seahorse that is in great shape. My question is would that be to much of an upgrade for a 1985 14' Bayliner? I'm not sure how much either of the motors weight, and will the transom handle any extra. Your expertise would greatly be appreciated!

Re: engine swap

Weight of the engine is not a concern. HP of the engine is a concern. Check the ID plate on the boat. It will indicate what the maximum HP rating is. If less than the 75 HP you have a potential insurance and liability issue. It is not good to overpower a boat.

That part of the coast gaurd plate is scratched off. It says 4 people or a little 800 lbs. I there a website I can find this info. I don't seem to be having any luck finding one.

Re: engine swap

I would be guessing, but in my view the boat should handle a 75 HP engine but that would be about tops.
