I am taking off a 1988 Evinrude 2 stroke 120 HP and installing a 2002 Yamaha 4 stroke 115 HP. Can I use my analog (needle) gauges with the Yamaha that worked with my Evinrude? Can I just hook them up and go? There is a tach, speedo, fuel guage and trim gauge. I guess if I go with the old gauges I need to depend on the alarm in the throttle control to warn for high temp etc as opposed to getting digital gauges with warning lights. Any thoughts?

Re: Engine swap

i would change the tach to the one with all the bells and whistles.

everything else should be ok...... maybe have to do some tricky wiring on the trim gauge depending on how many wires each have/had.

thats a big weight difference.... have you checked to see how much?

im betting around 80-100#

Re: Engine swap

The Evinrude is listed at 365 lbs. The Yamaha is listed at 420 lbs. Do you foresee problems with this? The boat is a Malibu 182-1700 lbs with no engine. Also note that originally this boat had 2 fuel tanks in the rear. The prev owner relocated the fuel tank to the frt cuddy floor which helps distribute the weight.

Re: Engine swap

i wouldnt think 55# would hurt anything, but it sounds like you are way underpowered for a 1700# boat.

my little bassboats are around 800-900 and are rated for a 115hp. and my ranger is 1050# and rated for a 150hp.

do you have any tags inside the boat listing max hp ,max weight ,etc....?

if not you can also look at nada.com and it will usually have all the specs.
