Hello folks,
I bought a 79,22.5 SeaRay overniter 228Mercruiser(cracked block) with a TR outdrive.
Im replacing the 305 with a 98 model 5.7 mercruiser complete set-up including manifolds, pumps etc.
My Question is how to correctly plumb the new set-up that includes a crank driven sea-water pump my old system didnt have, it used an impeller in the outdrive to supply the cooling . Do I use both the impeller and auxillary crank driven pump?, I would much prefer to use the late model manifolds that came with this new engine.
Thanks

Re: engine swap help

Hi there, TR drives used a belt driven sea pump mounted on the front of the engine , there isn't a pump in the leg. Are you sure it's a TR ? or is it a R or MR ? R and MR are just earlier versions of the Alpha drives , they have pumps .

Re: engine swap help

Thats whats confusing me too, searay tells me this unit serial # indicates a TR, and everything in reference material says it should have a belt driven pump Searay did say this was a little of an odd match -up ordering a 228 with a big-block outdrive but they said it did happen some.. Any help otherwise identifying this unit will help too

OK forgot you had a "SeaRay" searay .Merc and SeaRay did team up and put engine packages together but what we need to know is the type of drive in your boat.
-did you pull the old engine out and if you did is there a transmision attached to it ?
(TR uses tranny, R/MR no tranny)
- is there a shift cable coming through the transom? (R/MR uses a cable for shifting)
-also TR drives are huge and take two guys to lift R/MR much smaller.
Let us know what you find.

Thanks ****, you are right, iva R, or,MR on this boat,(no tranny). So, now I wonder if my old gimble will mate to my new set-up, I did get the bell housing with the new engine. All the while hoping this little upgrade in motor will be OK 4 this unit.
Thanks for your help.
