Engine stuck in reverse-Help!!!

My 2005 Mercury 150hp outboard is stuck in reverse. When I shift the lever into forward the lever moves but the engine remains in reverse. I thought the motor was shifting a little harsh lately, making a grinding sound, and someone told me to shift the engine with a "firmer" hand which I did but it still made a slight grinding noise.

Any suggestions on what I need to do to get the engine out of reverse and shifting again?

Rat, Take a look at the spot on the motor where the gearcase joins. On a lot of them you can see if the lower shift shaft is turning when shifting. Make sure it is. If is it not turning try to figure out why. Maybe the shift shafts are not mating, or the coupler is broken.
