I had trouble starting my motor yesterday. Once it started it seemed to run ok, got on plane no problem, plenty of power. However, if it sat for a while it was hard to start again. I dumped the fuel from the engine fuel filter into a container and also drained fuel from the Racor water separator into a container (photos). Looks like I have water in my fuel tank. I am located in Yarmouth, MA where we just had two tornados touch down and torrential rains. I don’t think it has ever been done (2003 boat) so tomorrow I am going to replace the o-ring on the fuel cap. How do I deal with the water that is there? It is a 104 gallon tank with about 75 gallons in it. I’m considering trying to pump out the water through the fuel sensor hole but, when I tried to remove the sensor to replace it I couldn’t budge it. I was afraid of breaking something.
Also, When I was trying to start the engine I got a buzzer that kept up while the key was turned and the engine did not crank. After a few tries the engine did start for a second or two and then died. In those instances the beep was a very short one when I turned the key. Eventually the engine started.. The photo shows the chart from the owners manual for a warning buzz. It doesn’t say anything about water in the fuel. There is plenty of oil and the engine never dropped rpms when running and I never got a beep when running. So I assume lack of oil is not the problem. There was good water flow out the tell-tale so lack of cooling shouldn’t have caused a warning. Would water in the fuel cause the warning beeps? The service manual doesn’t say anything about what the warnings mean. I just want to make sure I don’t miss anything.
