I have a 5.7 350hp carborated mercrusier. I recently had a surging issue at high rpm, I changed fuel lines and pump and it ran perfect. The other day at low rpm in the no wakes zones it started to sputter and would stall and not restart, after sitting for 10 minutes it would start and run fine. this happen twice and then ran great back to the marina. Also on both occasions I thought I heard a momentary clanking sound coming from the engine compartment.

Ayuh,...... Welcome Aboard,..... How much crap did ya find in the contents of the fuel filter,..??

My guess is,.... Some of the crap got past the filter, 'n is now inside the carb,.....

Probably oughta rebuild the carb, considerin' the fuel issues ya had,....

Momentary clanking is probably exhaust shutters with the rubber burned off em. My first thought when I heard you describe the behavior when hitting a no wake was same as Bondo, need to pull and clean the carburetor.

agree with above.

the clanking is from burned off shutters from an over-heat or lack of water issue.

the crappy running is from crud in the fuel system.

Thank you, I will start with changing the fuel water seperator and checking the contents.
If the rubber is burned off the shutter do they still work?

Sorta... they will still stop most surges until they fall apart.

A few symptoms there would have me checking the fuel tank vent line too.
