Engine stalls soon after starting

My late 90s 3.5HP Nissan stalls soon after starting. This motor is new to me. With the choke closed it starts right up but when I open the choke the engine quickly stalls. With the choke open and the throttle set at its slowest setting, the engine starts but stalls after a few seconds. If I try giving it some throttle after starting it immediately stops. The operating manual indicates this could be the result of numerous problems. Can someone tell me what the most likely issue is and what is the proper order to proceeds in trouble shooting this problem.

Most likely is a gummed up carb. Unless it was just done, I would disassemble and thoroughly clean the carb with compressed air in every orifice and chase it with very fine wire.

Verify the screen in the fuel stop **** is not clogged. Disassemble and soak carb in cleaner -- not just the spray stuff. Blow out the lines and carb with air. Reassemble, and you should be good to go. We have a couple of fleets of these indestructible motors, and 95% of problems of this type are crud in the carb.

I agree with the other posters. It's the carb. If you want to prove it to yourself, try spraying some fuel mix down the carb throat when it goes to stall. ( Old windex/cleaner bottle works good for this.) If it perks up, it prooves that it's starving for fuel. Fortunatly, it's a quick and cheap fix.

I pulled the carb off and it appears very clean. No evidence of it being dirty or gummed up (although I'm not sure want a gummed up garb looks like). Still having the same stalling problems. I pulled the spark plug and noticed the threads and electrode was oily. Could this be indicating there is another problem?

Thanks for the help!

Sounds like unburned fuel/oil residue on the plug. Probably normal. Finish cleaning out the fuel system, disassemble and SOAK the carb in cleaner, reassemble, install a fresh plug. You should be OK.

Thanks Paul. I will give this a shot this weekend and let you know how it goes.

I tried to check out Obersheimer Sails web site. Is this under development? I couldn't pull down any products

A quick visual inspection of the carb is usually not enough to verify being clean. Each orifice should be disassembled and held up to the light to inspect for buildup.
