Engine stalls at pick up from idle. 2000 Merc 5.0 V8 - Runs great if I pump throttle

Used most of old gas in gas tank this weekend..took 2 hours to burn off at idle. I couldn't get past idle without motor stalling. 2 hours later Finally got it to the gas pump and filled up with fresh petrol. Now goes like a train - once I get past the few revs above idle. I engage drive and then pump the throttle ( now very stiff - see other post!) and the engine will pick up and run great through to WOT. Some thing wrong with the carb settings or a carb jet..or just needs the junk burnt out of it more with more use...thx!

May be nothing more than an idle mixture adjustment, sounds more like the accelerator pump in the carb isn't operating properly.
Do you get 2 solid squirts of fuel from the carb when you move the throttle to WOT? (engine not running)

HI Don..I havent looked at the carb yet..tomorrows adventure. DO you mean I will see the two squirts when the throttle is pumped...

given the old gas problem I figured it had gotten gummed up with junk..

Yes, remove the flame arrestor and look in the carb. Engine not running.

will do..flame arrester is the round silver Air cleaner looking thing right..
