Engine sitting-long time

I have an Evinrude 90 hp.-1983 model that has not been run in fifteen years. I have no idea how it was put up. The engine turns over (by hand). I have not tried the starter yet. I will replace the water pump before attempting to start. I have already replaced the lower unit fluid and fogged the cylinders through the spark plug holes. Any ideas on what else to do? I believe the engine to be a very low hour unit. It sat in Arizona so corrosion wasn't a problem

If it was mine..I would clean the carbs and change the fuel filter. The compression check may not give a good true reading because its been sitting up and you need to check it at normal operational temp.

I suppose first order of business would be to check engine compression (compression testers run about $20-$30 US)

Also an invaluable tool would be a shop manual for the motor. Check the links on this site, or your local used book stores, or your local library for the appropriate book.

G'Luck!
Rex S.

I would have the gearcase resealed. The seals dry up and leak, and you may not notice it untill its to late. I bought a 84 90hp that had been sitting for 8 years. Did everything you did and after about 2 1/2 hours on the water I was looking for a new gearcase. Check the carb gaskets too. Mine leaked and thats where I thought the oil slick was comming from. There one little thing that work sometime.
That is to use brake fuild.
Fill the bottom end and let sat for about
a week and that well cause the seals
to expand. Then drain and but lube back in.
DO NOT RUN IT THAT WAY JUST LET IT SAT.
If you get it on the water have lube with
you run it for about 1 hour and change it.
BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY.
JUST A THOUGHT
GOOD LUCK
REX A. djohns19
I would also inspect all of the wiring! I have a johnson that sat 5 years indoors (ok it is a 1958 and who knows how it was cared for before) all of the wiring out side of the engine cover was garbage!
Richard

Brake Fluid??? Brake fluid is incompatiable with the seals in the lower unit!! Thats why rubber expands when it comes in contact with it. It also makes it softer. Yes it can make it seal for A SHORT TIME.. If it were MY drive do it right.. Brake fluid in the oil is like some old timer putting sawdust into the rear end in a car.. It will quiet it down for the short term but you still have not fixed the problem.. My .02

Ok Rex..Im new here..Sorry you think I voted YOU DOWN..!! Im still trying to learn THIS board.. You know as well as I it is hard sometimes to fully understand a person on a board. In person is different! If I hurt your feelings or missunderstood..Im sorry..Im still learning the computer thing here.

My point ONLY is that I dissagree with you on the Brake Fluid thing. It does not improve the problem over time...Just the Short time..Sorry if I offended you. Trent

Hope you have a Merry Christmas!! ANd a Happy New Year Rex! And everybody else..

Re: Engine sitting-long time

Hello Everyone,

Thanks SO MUCH for the replies. I believe I will remove the lower unit and have a dealer pressure check it. The shop manual describes a way to hook up water to the power head with the lower unit off! I'll fire (as long as I have spark) the engine that way after I rebuild the carbs and replace every hose under the cowling.
