engine runs great, tach needle pegs

I have an aq200c with points ignition. Everything works and the engine runs great. The tach howerver pegs the needle as soon as the ignition is turned to the run position. Even while the engine is running.

I ran a new wire from the coil to the back of the tach, thinking the wire maybe bad. no change.

Can anyone give me some direction with this. Is my tach bad?

If the ground is good, the power to the tach is good and the wire from the coil to the tach is good.
The tach is bad.

I will get hold of another tach and give it a try. Thanks for the response.
