Engine RPM Question

I'm new to boating and this is my first post on this forum. From what I can tell there's a lot of knowledge here.

I just purchased a used 1999 17' Nitro with a 125 Mercury engine. At idle when going into gear (forward or reverse)the engine stalls. Is this caused by a low idle or something else? Also, the dealer where I purchased the boat says the engine runs on 2 cylinders at low rpm and then all 4 at 1700 rpm and above - is that true? The engine does appear to "come alive" above this rpm range but I want to make sure it's designed to run this way and not some other problem. The boat runs great at cruising speed.

Thanks.

Re: Engine RPM Question

Yes it's a 2+4 engine idles on 2 runs on 4. The idle speed could be low or the carbs and linkage not adjusted properly
