Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... Probably TRS drives,....

Yes, you can pull the motors, without pullin' the drives, because of the transmissions,...

+1 agree, and will add; in many cases it's easier to pull both out at the same time. With pulling both you unbolt the prop shaft and support it. If you pull just the engine you need to support the transmission. When removing and installing the engine the transmission may need to be tilted and moved around, this movement will put stress on the shaft coupling. To reduce stress the shaft should be loosened and better yet disconnected.

In any even once everything is back together shaft alignment will need to be readjusted to within 0.003

and :welcome: to iboats

These would be the TR drive. Commonly used on house boats. Has a lower 2:1 gear ratio and accepts up to a 19" prop.

With all respect to you ALLDodge, it seems you are speaking of a inboard here where as it is actually a sterndrive.

None taken. but the OP said he had velvets going to the drives. Now they didn't make a whole lot of them but they did make some with transmissions, then went to an outdrive. It's a mix bag so figured if there is an issue in what he had then both sides would be covered. Need further info to determine exactly what were all working on. ;)

Couple questions first Alan, Are you wanting to do this while the boat is still in the water? That why you want to leave the drive on? Are the tailstocks of your tranies all the way into the transom plates which supports them or are the transmissions set forward and have a drive shaft running back to the transom? Do your velvet drives have a mount supporting them? You sure these are Velvet Drives and not the Merc Trans II. What year?

The TR drive was only made for a short time but was the most rugged IO drive system ever built. I have been told they stopped producing them because they would never sell any parts or get to bill out labor to fix them.

Not so sure what you consider a short time but they were made for 20 years, 73'-93'. Parts were always available from Mercury and a lot of them still are. Definitely are a big heavy duty monster of a drive.
