Thankyou in advance for your advice. New to boating and purchased a 1992 Bayliner Trophy 2352 with a newly rebuilt 5.7L 260hp that is carbureted. It had break-in oil in it when we brought it home. The elderly gentleman we purchased it from, purchased it from the person who did the rebuild and he quickly realized it was too much boat for him and never put it in the water. The first problem we had was an oil leak from the rear of the intake manifold and front timing cover seal. they were both repaired, but the front seal leaked again only under load at higher rpm(2500-3000). We had a compression test done and the results were 1(158)2(160)3(130)4(175)5(158)6(170)7(165)8(160).Mechanic said #3 plug was "shorted" and replaced all. Next time out the boat ran strong, but the front seal leaked again after replacing the timing cover with a metal one with new seal. The break-in oil was taken out by our mechanic and replaced with 40wt. when he initially repaired the intake manifold leak. We have only put about 15 hours on the engine since we bought it 2 years ago. On the muffs in the driveway, it doesn't have any blowby, but under load and higher rpm the engine seems under excessive internal pressure. Any help is much appreciated.

Howdy

Can you explain what you mean a bit more by this statement?

it doesn't have any blowby, but under load and higher rpm the engine seems under excessive internal pressure.

While in the water, having come onto plane, after a few minutes the valve covers start releasing pressure and maybe a few drops of oil. Also, the hoses to the flame arrestor have white vapor coming out. Thats when the front seal starts leaking. The oil pressure read 40-50 and temp guage 175. It is freshwater cooled.

I'm real sorry to say and hope I'm wrong, but if (the big IF) the motor was actually rebuilt, it was not done correctly. Your motor sounds like it has a lot of blow by, and the white vapor is probably a blown head gasket

Check you oil level after it has been running for a while

If indeed, it turns out I need a new engine, can you recommend a reputable seller(s) of new & reman marine engines. I would probably replace with another 5.7 L carbureted as I have an Alpha Gen 2 outdrive.

If indeed, the engine needs replacing, can you recommend any seller(s) of new or remanufactured engines that are reputable. I would probably replace it with a 5.7L carbureted simular engine as I have an Alpha One Gen 2 sterndrive.

If you can find a good local machine shop, you could probably get yours rebuilt locally, and even do some of the work your self if your up to it.

Otherwise, I would recommend for new crate motors
Michigan motorz
Summit Racing
Jegs High Performance
Your local GM dealership

For remanufactured motors
Same as above except the GM dealer

Suggest if you decide to go this route, let us know so we can help make sure what you get will fit without issue

Thanks so much for your help. I will get the engine checked out completely by a mechanic before deciding wether to rebuild or obtain a new motor. I will definately return here to ask about compatability. Thanks again for your help.

I'm just wondering about the compression reading on the #3 cylinder being about 25-30 psi low. . . could be a head gasket. I'm thinking the elderly gentleman knew more about the boat/engine than you may have realized.

Basically sounds like a poor quality rebuild and you are living the nightmare, sorry to say. :(

If it was rebuilt properly, was it broken in properly? If it was run hard before proper break in, yeah it could have issues
