I have a 2002 Chev Silverado with a Duramax Diesel motor. I'm satisfied with the performance it affords but if things can be better, it also gets my attention. Therefore, I've been trying to educate myself on the pros & cons of installing a performance chip on my truck.

Juice, Duramaximizer, and Superchips are three manufacturers that I know of so far which all boast improving economy while also increasing horsepower. Does anyone have experience using performance chips or modules that can offer any helpful advice?

Kevin

if its not off warranty yet it will be as soon as you chip it. I have said it before if chips were so great the would come from the factory with them. like the ones for the older powerstrokes yes they work but the trannies were already maxed out so you get some more power and shortened tranny life. in my book its not worth the trade off.

A friend of mine owns a duramax and has the programmer also. We took his truck out west hunting this year and let me tell ya, I was a skeptic before but I am a believer now!!! On the preformance mode with no trailer it seems like a diffrent truck. On the trailer tow mode it made a world of diffrence...no gear searching lowers the shift tollerances so that big diesel can do what it was built for...pull like a mule rather than search for a better gear. Improved fuel milage and performance overall. The 300+bucks for the programmer is a bargain: wouldn't own a duramax without it, especially if you tow...I dont mean 3000lbs for thirty miles I mean towing as in 3000miles and 10,000 lbs through the mountians. Those things are awsome!!!

Please also head the advice of the pro's as this is the opinion of an untrained skeptic but in my opinion it is factory programmed with to many sacrafices built in to come up with an overall package to handel all situations where with the programmer you can optimize the systrem for whatever task is at hand, be it tow or be it proformance. for the record he also has pipes on the truck but no airbox yet.

Check out Bullydog. They make serious plug n' play deisel modules that produce startling power increases. You can go from a basic module that plugs into the harness and produces something like a hundred extra ponies and a couple hundred extra foot pounds of torque to the big balls package that allows you to select different power levels with a knob. The big balls package is no joke though. We are talking propane injection, new exhaust, all that jazz. You would need to beef up the rest of the driveline, as the big balls package easily spins all four tires on dry pavement and will destroy everything aft of the engine in two seconds.

Thanks guys,
From the context of your posts, I do indeed have to educate myself on this a little more.

With nearly 50K on it. The truck is outside the normal 36K bumper to bumper warranty parameters. However, I have another 50K of warranty left with the 100K motor warranty. I usually keep my vehicles for 4-5 yrs. and anticipate running it for about another 2 or 3 yrs before I start looking for another truck.

Kevin

Best purchase I made for my Truck. I have a Superchip and it paid for itself in 6 months. In fuel savings.

Diesel fuel management chips are great! I have used them in my diesel vehicles for years with great results.

You just have to drive carefully because they will allow a diesel motor to rev up until it actually explodes!

They change the power curve and do tend to produce a bit more black smoke.... worth the money!

Bob

Answering a 5 year old question is really not a good idea....... the older posts are for the archives and are not meant to be answered. Thank you for your concern....... I will close this one now ;)
