Engine overheating on muffs

I hooked up the muffs and ran the engine for about 10 minutes while checking the voltage on the battery and alternator. Well it usually runs 180 all the time in the water and out. However, it kept creeping up to 200-210 so I turned the engine off. I heard a little squeaking/chirping type noise just before I turned it off.

I did a search here and found most people mentioned the impeller when overheating. Could this be the impeller needs changing? I have only had the boat a couple months and I don't know when it was last changed. Is the inpeller in the front of the engine with the 2 pipes running into it? Need help, because I am supposed to be taking my inlaws out on it tomorrow!

Yes, that's it. If you don't know when it was last replaced, probably a good idea to bite the bullet and do it. It's an easy job. 4 bolts and about $40 for the impeller (VolvoPenta OEM). Just make sure you put the lube (or vaseline) on the new impeller when installing it, it will keep it from burning up before the water gets to it.

Depending on how fast your engine was running, your "running hot" may be normal. Your muffs and a garden hose can not supply the amount of water that your pump can pick up from the lake. One of the things I do when running on muffs is to duct tape them to the outdrive (it provides less leakage) and I also duct tape over the pick-up hole on the very bottom of the outdrive.

Hope this helps.

P.S.

You may want to remove the old impeller and take it with you to compare sizes. Most good Volvo shops will stock them, but there are two kinds. One takes an o-ring to seal the housing, the other takes a small foam gasket.

Better to have it in hand and know for sure.

The Impellar is usually the ticket for your issue! I had the same problem when I bought my boat, then was advised by many experts on this site to replace the impellar. I followed their instructions to replace and manuals they provided and the temp issue was gone! very cheap to replace as long as you to the labor. The impellar that was in was so worn, who knows when it was replaced last... You should be alright after replaced!

I am gonna take the plate off and look at it. Can I tell by looking at it if it is bad. I called every marine store in my area and nobody has this impeller. Volvo must not be very popular around here. All I had to say is for volvo and they said no they don't deal with them too much.

Just to be sure I did not create the problem...could I have let air in the cooling system by opening the sea water filter/canister while running at idle? I opened it to check the filter while running and the water started overflowing. Could air have got it and that cause the overheating?

I have been told not to use vaseline for an impeller install. People say dish soap is a better choice. I've used cheap dish soap and it works fine.I can't remember why but I think vaseline attacks the parts.
