Engine overheating / Non circulation of water

ok wizards. So when I put it on muffs it's not splitting out water from the transom like it normally is. I waited 5 or 10 minutes or so and temperature starting to rise way past normal so I shut her down. I already replaced impeller (which looked fine when I took old one out). This all started shortly after getting stuck on the beach. Like a idiot I tried gunning it in reverse trying to get unstuck. Finally got unstuck but engine overheating shortly after. I can't help but think that something got plugged up with sand or something during this episode. I found a diagram of the circulation system (http://forums.iboats.com/filedata/fetch?photoid=8555476). Where should I start to troubleshooting this. Is it likely that something is plugged up or may it be a case of a bad component such as thermostat (do those go back often?)

start by removing the drive and using a hose in the water inlet hole, if you didn't blow the hose off the fitting the water should exit only the exaust system nowhere else, Water splashing out from the gimbal housing means the hose is off or split.
If water does not exit the motor ,remove the therm housing and therm for inspection. If loaded with sand, remove lower hoses from manifolds checking for sand
If there filled, you most likely have sand in the block, remove the core plugs, block drains and water pump and flush with a hose
THEN HOPE FOR THE BEST

ok so I don't have a new gasket on me to r&r the drive but I do remember checking to make sure that hose was attached properly. I went ahead and removed the hose coming through the transom from the motor. I put the muffs on and started boat. Nothing coming out that hose so I don't think it's even making it to the motor. I then put the garden hose down that hose and turned on water. No water came out of little holes where I attach muffs, should it? What's strange is a bit of water is coming out of the middle of outdrive. There's a little hole right behind the bolt near the shift foot. If I plug that with my finger it stops for a minute but then continues to come out of somewhere near there. When I have the engine running with muffs on there is also some water coming out of this location as well as exhaust. Is this not normal? Might it still be that hose inside bell housing?

when you removed the hose at the therm housing and nothing came out told you no water was making it thru the drive. you could have split the hose or forced it off the barbed fittings behind the housing. Either way ,your going to remove the drive to fix it. So remove the drive now to verify where the problem is.
Insert a hose into the water inlet and test the engine. If you insert the hose and turn on the water, you should only see water exiting the exaust system and not from behind the gimbal housing. From behind the housing tells you that the hose popped off or is split from the pressure.
use photobucket.com (its free) to post some pics of this hole

sounds like your power steering cooler might be full of muck. You can remove the drive and back flush with garden hose from the tstat hsg end and see if any much blows out the back.

I tried that this morning but I didn't use any high pressure or anything. perhaps I should have. Only a little bit of water came out of outdrive. Most of it spilled into the bildge. I think you might be on to something though. I almost removed the hoses from that sucker this morning but I wasn't sure what that thing was. I thought maybe it was some sort of check valve or something. Is there anything inside that thing that is prone to getting plugged up or is it just a hollow tube with a t-fitting and hose attached?

Thermostat housing does sould like bottle neck. Rest of passages are larger. You could also undo hoses on block, manifolds and risers and pray water passes easily!

Did you replace the water pump impeller before the sand bar incident or after? If after was the housing and tube packed full of sand?

You really should listen to the advice from the Doc and drop that OD.
