Not all motors have overheat warnings especially small ones. The overheat damage depends on the speed of the motor at the time. If it was idling it may be ok maybe a head gasket and waterpump maybe more. If it was flying along wide open could have serious scoring that may need a rebuild. Motor will need to be inspected to know for sure. It is a hard question to answer because there are to many things that could happen in an overheat situation. Your motor will not have an overheat warning.

Gauge watching is no replacement for fishing, but a temp gauge is easy to install and can save a motor. A surface temp gauge works fine. It's easy to just glance at it periodically and see if there is anything out of the ordinary.

Long ago my outboard teacher / shop owner said.--------------" These motors will be damaged in 10 seconds, when there is a complete loss of coolant at full throttle "
