I just installed my rebuilt outdrive [ mercruiser SE drive ] on to a chevy 350. We pumped fluild in the outdrive and when i started the engine and let it run i have a noise that comes from the back of the engine or out drive. I can hear it good at the back of the engine and even better if i sit at the out drive. DO i need to put this thing in gear for a while to get the fluild around the outdrive. Kinda sounds like a gearset low on fluild.

Need to be a bit clearer. How much oil did you PUMP IN FROM THE BOTTOM HOLE untill it came out the top hole. Once filled there is no need to move the oil around. Who did the rebuild and was it shimmed properly. Most shops will not let a drive out the door unless it was filled and pressure tested.

What is the condition of the gimbal bearing?

Is this an SEI drive? They are know for having some noise when new.
