engine oil keeps rising

1993 OMC 5.8l (FWC). I check the oil every week and every week it seems to rise 1/4 in on the dipstick. I thought it was the mechanical fuel pump leaking gas in the motor so I changed it with a new one and it is still rising. The oil is clear and the oil cap has no signs of foam. I just can't figure out why it is rising.

Howdy,

It's either rising due to gasoline or water in the oil.

Water will be obvious pretty soon. You'll smell gas in the oil eventually.

If it's closed cooled, you should be seeing a loss of coolant if it's leaking.

To rule out water, try draining the pan from the bottom

I know it is not the antifreeze, how else would gas get in the oil if it didn't leak through the fuel pump?

It's possible that the carb is over flowing but you'd REALLY know that.

Also, gas in the oil will evaporate fairly quickly once the engine warms up.

If you don't drain any water out of the pan, I get a carpenters level and use it to determine if you're not measuring the oil at the same level each time... (roll and longitudinal axis)
