Engine oil for new 4 stroke

I have never had a boat before and have a question before I ruin a new outboard. I just bought a Nissan 6hp 4 stroke. Is 10W-40 Mobil 1 High Mileage oil OK for the crankcase fill? I am not asking if synthetic is better than dino. I just want to know if it is acceptable.

Thanks, Bobbo

Re: Engine oil for new 4 stroke

I would seriously consider using mineral (dino) oil from the outboard manufacturer until you are confident that the rings are seated.

I recently purchased two new Hondas. I ran my 50 hp for about 30 hours on Honda dino oil. I changed it about five times during that period. Way too often but cheap insurance in my opinion.

Once I got a full season on the engine I switched to Amsoil marine oil.

It is claimed that synthetic oils are too slippery to properly break in piston cylinders and rings. Maybe true, maybe not. I didn't take the chance so I put a season on with Honda branded oil. Now it's Amsoil all the way.

I would consider using an Amsoil high efficiency oil filter immediately, as it is much better than factory stock.

Dino oil, 10w-30, 4-stroke OB rated (more corrosion inhibitors) is best for break-in, changing at 10 hours. Do not overfill, not even a drop. The Tohatsu/Nissan/Merc 4/5/6 does not have an external oil filter.

OK, I have it filled to between the low and full marks with Quicksilver Marine Lubricants Performance 4-Stroke Outboard Oil SAE 10W-30. I am a little concerned because the manual says to use oil with an API rating of SF, SG, SH, SJ, SL, or SM. This oil bottle has no API ratings on it that I can find. It is NMMA FC-W Certified.

Thanks,

FC-W is the rating you want.
