My 1997 C115 makes a low "pinging" noise when it reaches 5100 rpms. It is not overheating and does not make the noise below 5100. There are no unusual vibrations. The gas has stabilizer in it and is appr.5-6 months old. I've still got 1/2 a tank to burn off before adding new gas. What other problem(s) could it be?

Re: engine noise

Is that the max RPM's it will turn? The combination of overage fuel and over propped motor could easily lead to an engine failure. I would consider draing off the fuel and running it in something else and refreshing that in the tank.
I understand the high cost of fuel, but engine repairs are also very expensive. you can buy a lot of gas for the cost of a blown power head.
I have bought or repaired a lot of powerheads in the last few years that were detonated by fuel left too long in the tanks.
