I am dealing with a 1987 Sea Ray Seville powered by a 3.0 L Mercruiser, my problem is not the initial start-up.....this is fine. The problem is with the re-start after shutting it down for a while. It runs fine for a few minutes then starts to miss badly....Once I was able to work through it by playing with the throttle.....usually it stalls and there is a strong fuel smell....I can only start it by holding the throttle wide open as you would if you flooded the engine.... I do know that it is not due to the choke not opening.....any ideas? Thanks

Leaking needle valve in the carb or sunken floats. Rebuild the carb. Now.

Could also be a bad fuel pump... Is there gas in the yellowish line from the fuel pump to the top of the carb? If so, get a new fuel pump ASAP...

My dads boat was acting that way too. It ended up being his ignition system. It wasn't getting the proper volts to the coil. we rebuilt the carb, bought a new carb, and find out it was never the problem. I'd check your voltage at the coil and distributor just to be sure.
