engine left running 30-40 seconds out of water

I have a 1989 Dixie super skier with an inboard mercruiser engine.
I have been teaching my daughter to help pull the boat off the ramp.
Last time she forgot to turn it off when I pulled it out. (I should have reminded her).
I pulled it out and about 30 seconds later saw her waving arms, got out of truck and heard screeching noise.
Immediately shut it off.
Got it home used a plunger to run water through the intake and started, turned over, but the screeching noise is still there.
Could thisbe the impeller or something worse?

A little more info, clutch was in, but it was in neutral

Even if the impeller is toast the screeching should have stopped when water was going thru it. Kind of wonder if something else happened
