I have a 1985 thompson 140 Think It is Carrera style. There is a slight banging noise when you first put it in gear. Really don't have the proper way to explain the noise, it is not loud seems more like a tention or pulling or resistance , but there is one. What could cause this? Thank you anyone for an answer, Donna

Hi Donna,

Welcome Aboard!

Sounds like you may have either a lower shift cable either out of adjustment or it's failing. The banging noise is likely the clutch dogs not going into gear properly. (You also might be shifting too slowly.....DO NOT try to shift from neutral slowly. do it rather briskly)

It WILL damage the drive if you allow it to keep doing that.

You might have a look at the following thread. It won't necessarily answer your specific question but it will help you on "what" questions to ask.

Yes, a clunk when going into gear is normal. Just make sure your engine RPMs at idle are not to high. Should be around 650.

If it's an Alpha style drive. If it's a Bravo drive you shouldn't be hearing anything...

Um guys. She didn't say "clunk".

Donna, if there's a "slight banging noise" try shifting a little quicker. If it changes shifting quickly. You're probably just shifting a little too slowly.

If it "Bangs" (and the RPM increases before it shifts) THEN you may have an adjustment problem or possibly a bad shift cable. AND it needs to be fixed.

It's VERY hard to diagnose something on a described "noise" when the person describing the noise (admittedly) doesn't know HOW to describe the noise!

How would I know Alpha from Bravo?

If you don't know the difference visually, post the drive serial number and we can check it. (or a photograph of the drive.)
