Hi Guys, I am sure this is a stupid question, but how do you identify different parts for your motor. The motor on my new to me boat is a 1990
Mercruiser 5.7L serial #0C871242. I want to replace the fuel filter in the carb, the water/fuel separating filter, and the oil filter. I have the manuel that came with the boat for a mercruiser/alpha combo, and I have the Seloc manuel but they do not list specific product numbers for theses parts. I went to West Marine but they did not seem to able to tell me very much. Does the official Merc manuel list these parts? Thanks in advance for you response.

Re: Engine Information

That's not a stupid question, you just got a stupid person at West marine.

There's 3 or 4 dozen marinas around Barrie that have Sierra marine parts catalogs as well as original mercruiser parts (your option) and they can look up the parts you need at their counter. Just take your serial number with you. You did your homework.
I didn't know there was a West marine in Barrie area, but apparently they are useless anyways...so it's just as well...

Re: Engine Information

Thanks Hystat, They are in the south end Walmart Plaza at Molson Park Drive. I guess I assumed the owners manual would be like the one you get with a car that list's all the general maintenance items and their part numbers.

Re: Engine Information

If you go to the Mercruiser Parts Express site, and type in your serial number and Zip Code, you can get all the Mercruiser part numbers for your engine. You will need the drive serial number for drive and transom shield parts because it's a different catalog. Once you have the OEM number finding a cross reference number is easy.
http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/PartsExpress/HomePage/homepage.asp
The service manuals do not list the part numbers, because they change and get superceded quite often. But the parts express number will give you the new numbers.
If you are planning on doing your own maintenance and repairs, I suggest you get rid of the Seloc and get a Mercruiser manual. The drive manual is online. Here's the link.\
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6covr3.pdf
Can't help with an engine manual online, but you can order one from Mercruser at this link.
https://appcenter.mercurymarine.com/litreq/orderForm.jsp?type=mc

Re: Engine Information

Thanks Don S., I really appreciate your input. I believe with the very knowledgeable help from people such as yourself I should at least try and do my own repairs and preventive manitenance. The work I was able to accomplish on my trailer (although second nature to most) was quite rewarding to get everthing from lights to brakes operational. The boat comes out this weekend, I am sure I will have a post for Sunday!
