engine idling too low...?

the engine is a 1988 yamaha 150hp etxg. i had an over heating problem so i recently replaced the water impeller. well... turns out when i put the bottom back on it was in the wrong gear (as in reverse wasnt reverse and forward wasnt forward if you understand what i mean). i have since corrected the problem but the engine is idling so low that i cannot put it in neutral without it stalling. i adjusted the carburetor screw hoping that was the problem but without success.

any idea what the problem could be???? i think it could be the timing.

please help me out

Being the motor is that old I would say you need to go through the carbs, clean, and make sure everything is adjusted like the specs in your manual. Or take it to a Yamaha mechanic, you should not just start turning screws on the carbs

ok, i will refer to my manual for specs and i was planning on getting the carburetor rebuilt soon. what would be some problems i would be having if my timing were off and would my running it with the gears being off throw the timing off?

A inductive timing light will tell you about your timing, but gears being wrong by stabbing lower unit will not have anything to do with it as far as I know.

If you know nothing about the maintenance that has been done to the motor you need to start from scratch and check or replace every thing on the list of normal preventive maintenance. Check our manual.

Check compression, spark, fuel pressure/vacuum, timing, clean carbs, etc

Running a cylinder or 2 lean will eat pistons
