So, on the surface, I have a 1990 5.7 litre mercruiser. But the Devil is in the detail. When I bought the boat in April 2016, the PO told me it was a 1990 model, but had extensive work done to it. (circa summer 2014 according to receipts) The boat came with several boxes of bits and pieces, including a crankshaft and a few pistons and numerous other parts. here in Ireland, boats don't always come with any detailed paperwork and "title" as you might call it, doesn't exist. Buying a boat is like buying a second hand wardrobe!

I did get some documentation, owners handbook etc. and the ( original) engine number was included, but was scrubbed out with the word "changed" written in alongside. I can't find the engine number anywhere where it should be, despite exhaustive searching, complete with camera, mirror, flashlight and squeezing myself into the most inaccessible places.

I think I've identified it as a non vortec model (12 bolts). It has Thunderbolt IV ignition, no points, Rochester carb. Power steering, mechanical fuel pump. The flame arrestor cover has two stickers on it. One reads; Transom Assembly OB 986447 and the other reads; Drive Unit OB 998967.

The thermostat has a part number? 9-820 11-3901. Apart from the firing order there is a number stamped on the top of the block. 10243880 C, which I'm to believe denotes year 1996, which might make sense, given the amount of work previously done on the engine. So, with all that in mind, can anyone point me in the right direction to definitively identify my engine. Thanks in advance.

Ayuh,... A quick google of yer block number says it's a "10243880 Small Block V8 1995-1999 350, 4 bolt, crate engines and ZZ4, roller cam", ...

The heads are pre-'96, as they're not Vortec,....
'n it sounds like the accessories bolted to the long block are the original 1990 Merc dressin's,....
