Engine hours

Hi there..

I have a tachometer issue that's bugging me maybe someone has a solution.. I recently replace my oem yamaha tachometer 6y5-835 that came with the boat which had 483 engine hours, I bought a newly used (3 months) old speedometer and techometer which has 31 hours from the previous owners engine still on it, every wire was a like for like plug in thechometer, I'm wanting my 483 engine hours to display on the techometer but it shows his 31 engine hours, does anyone have any solution to my issue. Thank You in Advance.

Just provide power as indicated

How do you know the 483 is accurate? Most hour meters are not accurate, and the are generally used for maintenance guidance

This is what I did. Just set an alarm for an hour or so before you hit the numbers of hours you want so the meter doesn't go past the hours you want.
Hook it up to the battery so the hour meter runs constantly.
Disconnect it at the hours you want.

When I bought the boat the owner showed me on that the engine had low hours at 483.. I don't know if this is the correct engine hours.

Playing devil's advocate...how do you know it was accurate? My Four Winns would start clocking hours if the key was turned to run with the engine not started. You could hear it clicking away.

Personally, I'd put a sticker next to it somewhere with what you think are the correct hours then do some basic math for the next owner.

I am old school I use a write in the rain bound notebook for every boat and keep manual notes. A boat journal with vital info and records.

Do any experienced believe any hour meter that has been used in any boat ? I sure would not.
Boat has brand new engine in it. DUUUUHHH On buying it based on the hour meter ? bigger DUUUHH

So the Hobbs meters I had to take the readings on before takeoff on detection flights were lying? We use ETMs in control panels for pump control and the hours on the meters match what the data logging is saying for run times. Sounds like how the hour meters are installed is what causes the inaccuracies.

These days just plug in or connect via bluetooth to the I/O to determine the hours. Not sure if outboards are the same or not...been a while since I owned one of those.

I wouldn't trust an add-on hourmeter at all. Too many variables including....owner simply disconnecting it to keep hours low.

I know someone who has a Chevy Avalanche and when he first leased it, he bought a second gauge cluster to keep the mileage low. Would swap every so often. Still owns the Av today.

My 2022 Suzuki 115hp keeps the official hour count internally in it's computer. The dealer reads it out when I take it in for service. I keep my own log, which is usually high by about 10%-20% due to estimation rather than starting and stopping my stop watch on time.

My previous boat had the hour meter die at a little over 750. The replacement hour meter died at just over 500. It probably had over 3000 when I gave the boat away, still running well, but without an hour meter. At some point the meter matters not. My current boat has 720 but computers do a better job than the old meters did. That said, it's still only on it's third set of plugs. Care and use matter more than hours, although it's nice to track. For a buyer its 'check condition' rather than hours that should matter.
