I have a 1983 150hp evinrude outboard as per the serial# however the cover says 175hp. I am wondering what the difference are to the engine between the 150 and 175 hp engines. I have not used this engine yet so I want the correct prop.

Re: Engine Horsepower Differences 150/175 ?

Welcome!!

The blocks are the same on 150 & 175 149 cid crossflows. The carbs are slightly different. The 150 XP / GT blocks tend to have port timing more like a 200 cf and different heads & carbs. The model number tells what it is rather than the serial number.

Go ahead and prop it at 5800 with an average load and you'll be fine.

excellent thanks for the reply. The model number matches the one on the leg and block. i was just wondering if it had a different set of carbs, etc., on it. The boat is a 16ft sidewinder only rated for 135hp, average loading im 1500lbs. So with the 150hp hope to achieve a little more jam. i am currently running a 69' 115 johnson with a 17pitch at GPS of 47.1Mph. Any ideas on what kind of speeds I may be able to get?

Thanks,

47 ain't fast enough for ya huh? I'm guessing you don't have an insurance policy either. The ins. co's tend to frown on way overpowered boats...lawyers love em though! Stay safe and for heavens sake don't get in a wreck...they'll own everything you do now!

Up here in the Yukon the lakes are big and cold and......well empty. i used to have a GSXR750 street bike 170Mph+, needless to say Im still alive, but have since sold the bike and traded for a more reasonable hobby. As far as insurance yes (Stella) is insured, as she is used in Skagway Alaska on occation. A guy can't afford a accident in someone elses country. I do try to stay as safe as possible, and save the speed for the straights. In the future there are plans for a in/out 350V8 and leg setup. All good things take time. There is convenience in being able to throw a monster on the back of your boat though.

Appreciate the responses..
