Engine has sat...rusty exhaust valve and risers.

I recently purchased a '72 F233 with a 350 and pre-alpha outdrive. Today I pulled the risers and found them full of loose rust scale. PO claimed the engine was new 5 years ago, had 100 hrs put on it and was winterized and parked. The risers were full of antifreeze, so I'm inclined to believe the boat was really winterized before parked.

7 out of 8 exhaust ports were clean and looked good, valves were clean as well. The 8th had some surface rust on the port face and the valve itself has some rust scale on it.

Any advice?

Ayuh,... If this a Saltwater boat,+ that's outa the water jackets,...
It's pretty Normal...
If it's outa the exhaust passages, it's a Problem,...
Is the riser gasket leaking,..??

Has anyone ever used a product named KROIL? I poured it in the cylinders of my boat engine after sitting over ten years in storage and everything came apart looking good. I wonder about using it for winterizing.

The rust was falling down out of the riser, into the exhaust passages. From what i could tell little/none actually got into the engine, there is a slight "lip" on the exhaust port which prevented that from happening.

At this point, would you recommend pulling the heads?

No, but I'd probably replace the risers,+ probably the manifolds...

Has the motor been started by you,..??

Haven't started it...I wanted to get some Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders before firing it up. It does turn over freely.

Ayuh,... So Start it.... I wouldn't be pulling heads without a reason....

The reason to pull the heads would be to check for rust in the cylinders, but if it's just going to blow out then I'm not worried.
